ニューヨークタイムズでは、ソニーが1000億円以上の経費削減のために人員削減を計画していると伝えています（more than 100 billion yen, or $1.1 billion）。Billionは10億ですから、10億ドルは1000億円です。最近のニュースでは最もよく使用される単位になりました。

BBCは、どの国で人員削減が行われるのはまだ不明（did not say in which countries the staff would go）としています。Goはまさに、どこかに行くという厳しい言い方です。

NPRでは、ソニーのライバルの韓国サムソンもコストカットをする（Sony's South Korean rival, Samsung also announced major cost cuts Tuesday）と伝えています。英語でもコストカットはcost cutsです。

Following suit of Toyota and other Japanese auto makers, Japanese companies in other sectors have started to plan cost cuts and labor reduction.  Though it is a worldwide plan, the news must come as a shock to the public, because Sony is a very prominent global business.
